            "ds_source": "<p>In this paper, a method of non-uniform clinical target volume (CTV) to the edge of planned target volume (PTV) caused by rotation and translation uncertainty is implemented and evaluated in the treatment planning system (TPS). Materials and methods: Based on the previously published statistical model, the relationship between target edge and distance D (from isocenter to target), setting uncertainty and significance level was established. For a single CTV, it can be considered as a combination of multiple small volume elements or target points. Using the proposed statistical model, the marginal values of each point can be obtained. The whole edge of non-uniform CTV-PTV is determined by the combination of all possible edges of CTV boundary points. This method is implemented in pinnacle3 treatment planning system and compared with uniform edge algorithm. Ten vertebral metastasis targets and multiple brain metastasis targets were selected for evaluation. The function of combined CTV-PTV margin with D is calculated under various initial translational margin and rotational uncertainty. With the increase of combination margin, the rotation uncertainty and translation margin increase. For the same rotational uncertainty, a smaller initial translation margin needs a larger rotational margin to compensate for the rotational error. Compared with the uniform margin algorithm, the advantage of this method is that for a given CTV, the volume of PTVs can be minimized and the same significance level can be obtained. Using vertebral metastasis targets and multiple brain metastasis targets, a series of volume differences were obtained for various translation edge and rotation uncertainties.
