However, due to the unique structure of cracks with a large depth - to - width ratio, there is currently a lack of effective methods for accurately measuring crack depth in engineering. This study proposes a new concept: instead of directly detecting the crack tip morphology, it detects the crack tip indicator. We developed a high - permittivity, highly fluid liquid indicator, and customized an indicator injection device and specific - frequency radar antenna. Through radar - based visualization during injection, this method accurately identifies the crack tip position. Using this self - developed technique, we precisely measured the crack depth in the concrete structure of Xiaowan Dam's internal gallery at the 1150 m elevation, solving the industry - long - standing problem of accurate crack depth measurement in hard - to - reach areas. The data obtained can support the evaluation and prevention of cracking hazards in Xiaowan Dam.
