Based on the flow direction raster map, a flow accumulation raster map is generated, where the value of each cell on the flow accumulation raster represents the total number of raster points flowing into that cell from the upstream catchment area, i.e., the number of inflow paths (NIP) converging into that cell. Areas with a larger NIP can be considered valleys, while areas with an NIP of zero are higher locations, potentially representing watersheds within the basin. The basic idea of flow accumulation analysis is to assume that each point on a DEM represented by a regular grid has a unit volume of water. Following the natural flow of water from high to low areas, the water volume flowing through each point is calculated based on the flow direction raster of the region, resulting in the flow accumulation raster (flow accumulation amount) for the region.
