The experimental site is situated within an irrigated cropland area at the Linze Inland River Basin Research Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences (100°08′27″E, 39°19′38″N; elevation: 1,381 m above sea level). The region experiences a temperate arid climate, characterized by a mean annual precipitation of 113.4 mm, mean annual air temperature of 7.6 °C, mean annual sunshine duration of 3,051.1 hours, average frost-free period of 165 days, and mean annual potential evaporation of 2,341 mm. The groundwater table lies at an average depth of approximately 5 m below the surface. In 2009, the experimental field was cultivated with seed-production maize (Zea mays L.), with the growing season spanning from April 10 to September 20.
