In a flow direction raster, a "depression" refers to one or a group of interconnected cells where the flow direction cannot be assigned one of the eight valid values, also known as a "sink". Depressions occur when all neighboring cells are higher than the cell being processed, or when two cells flow into each other, forming a loop consisting of two cells.
