Chlorophyll pigments and fluorescence can both be measured through Earth orbit satellite sensors. Here, we demonstrate that using these measurements can reliably determine the photosynthetic capacity of leaves on a global scale. This new satellite based information overcomes the bottleneck of global ecological research, which currently lacks clear spatial information.
