Based on summarizing the characteristics and pathways for functional optimization of different flood storage and detention areas, a technical guideline for the classification and management of such areas has been developed. This guideline provides technical guidance for the practical management and operation of flood storage and detention areas within the Yangtze River Basin, enriches the methods for evaluating and managing these areas based on their classification, and has resulted in significant social and economic benefits.
