From June 22 to 30, 2025, after the conclusion of the Fifth International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology in Mongolia, Deputy Director of our station Qiao Yongping and Postdoctoral Doctor Wang Dong and Lou Peiqing jointly carried out the field survey and observation equipment maintenance of permafrost in Mongolia. The joint inspection work area covers typical permafrost distribution areas such as the Altai Mountains, Hangai Mountains and Kent Mountains in Mongolia, with a journey of more than 5000 kilometers. The main tasks of this joint inspection include: (1) Field observation data collection: obtaining the latest observation data from 10 sets of surface meteorological and active layer water and heat monitoring systems deployed by our station in the permafrost region of Mongolia in 2023 and 2024;(2) Observation equipment maintenance: Conduct the deployed observation instruments (Including automatic weather stations, soil water and heat sensors, data collectors, etc.) Carry out comprehensive inspection and maintenance to ensure stable equipment operation and continuous and reliable data collection;(3) Recovery of ground temperature data along the line: Recovery of laid HOBO ground temperature recorders along the survey route, collect surface temperature series data, and make on-site replacement for lost or damaged probes to ensure the integrity and representativeness of the observation data.
This field work has further deepened the cooperative relationship between China and Mongolia in the field of permafrost monitoring and scientific research, and steadily promoted the construction of a joint China-Mongolia-Russia cold region environment observation network under the "Belt and Road" initiative. The collected data will be used for permafrost change process analysis and model parameter optimization research, which has important scientific significance and practical value for revealing the response mechanism of permafrost on the Mongolian Plateau to climate change.
