On December 22, the State Key Laboratory of Cryosphere science of Northwest Institute of ecological environment and resources of Chinese Academy of Sciences held a press conference on 2018 Alaska glacier catalogue, which released 27043 glaciers in Alaska, covering a total area of 81285km2. This is the first time to release the latest results of glacier resources survey in the Arctic region after China's first glacial catalogue (2002) and China's second glacial catalogue (2014).

According to the statistics of rgi6.0, there are 215543 glaciers in the world, with a total area of 705253km2. Among them, the glacier area in Alaska accounts for 12.3% of the world. In the past 50 years, the contribution of glaciers in Alaska to sea level has accounted for one third of the total contribution of mountain glaciers in the world.

Glacier is an indicator of global change. Glacier change has an extremely important impact on global sea level rise, watershed water resources, ecosystem balance and snow disaster. Glacier cataloging is the most important basic work of glacier research, which is to investigate and record the quantity, area, spatial distribution and related information of regional glaciers according to certain standard, and provide background data for the study of glacier change and its impact.
