The National Key Basic Research and Development Program (973) project "Research on Desertification Process and Its Control in Northern China (TG2000048700)" (2000.10-2005.09) will reveal the causes, sources, occurrence rules and transport routes of sandstorms in China. Understanding the process, present situation, temporal and spatial distribution and trend of desertification land in northern China is of great practical significance for accelerating the implementation of the national strategy of western development, promoting regional social and economic development, narrowing the difference between the east and the west, and guaranteeing political stability, national unity and national security. It can provide theoretical basis and technical support for the formulation and implementation of the national desertification control plan, and serve for the implementation of the National Desertification Control Project Plan and the National Ecological Environment Construction Plan. In particular, the method and system of prediction and warning of sandstorm are of great significance for taking effective measures, reducing disaster losses and improving environmental quality. The project will also study the impact of modern human activities on desertification and dust storms, and raise environmental awareness among the public and social groups; This project will summarize the anti-desertification technologies at home and abroad, explore new anti-desertification measures, and serve the implementation of anti-desertification projects.
