In January 2015, during China's 31st Antarctic expedition, soil samples were collected from Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica. Through strict quality control, the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined. PAHs mainly come from the biosynthesis process of terrestrial, aquatic plants and microorganisms. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic, genotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic, which can cause a variety of harm to human body. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a kind of synthetic organic compounds, which are widely used in industry and have caused global environmental pollution.
