The monthly standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) can be used to monitor and evaluate the drought characteristics of one month or longer drought periods. Based on the data of 427 meteorological stations in Chinese Mainland from 1961 to 2018, a daily SPEI dataset was established to overcome the shortcomings of rough monthly SPEI time scale. This dataset can not only be used to identify the start and end dates of drought events, but also to study meteorological, agricultural, hydrological, and socio-economic droughts at different time scales.

Calculate daily SPEI by the difference between daily precipitation and daily potential evapotranspiration.
To ensure the continuity and completeness of data recording, 427 meteorological stations were selected as the research objects, and meteorological stations with missing data exceeding 30 days throughout the period were excluded.
