This dataset is an updated version of the "A long time series dataset of snow depth of China from 1978-2012". The original data used to produce this dataset differs from the previous version in that the snow depths from 2008 to 2016 were extracted using brightness temperatures from the SSMI/S sensor, as AMSR-E ceased operation in 2011.
This dataset provides daily China-wide snow cover thickness distribution data with a spatial resolution of 0.25 degrees from January 1, 1979 to December 31, 2016. The original data used to invert this snow depth dataset were obtained from the SMMR (1979-1987), SSM/I (1987-2007) and SSMI/S (2008-2016) daily passive microwave bright temperature data (EASE-Grid) processed by the US National Snow Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Since the three sensors are mounted on different platforms, there is some systematic inconsistency in the data obtained. The temporal consistency of the bright temperature data was improved by cross-calibrating the bright temperatures from different sensors. The snow depth inversion was then carried out using Dr Che Tao's algorithm based on Chang's algorithm modified for the area of China. For details of the inversion method, please refer to the data description document "Introduction to theA long time series dataset of snow depth of China from 1979-2016.doc".
The dataset is a latitude and longitude projection, one file per day, with files named in the following way: year + day, e.g. 1990001 for the first day of 1990, 1990207 for the 207th day of 1990. Please refer to the data file for detailed data descriptions.
