The Yellow River is the second longest river in China and its sediment problem has attracted the attention of people all over the world. The river basin is an important natural unit. Using the SRTM-DEM and ASTER-GEDEM datasets as data sources, the upper Yellow River basin boundary was extracted using a combination of the river burn method and the river scalar method under the ArcGIS software platform to obtain the basin boundary of the entire upper Yellow River from the source area to the town of Hekou.
The map is stored as an ArcGIS,.shp file, and the watershed boundary spans five provinces (autonomous regions) in Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia, with a total area of 55.06 × 104 km2.
Watershed boundaries are important natural units for hydrological, soil erosion and non-point source pollution studies, and by extracting watershed boundaries it is possible to delineate the extent of soil erosion and non-point source pollution transport.

Srtm-dem and aster-gdem released in the United States
Taking srtm-dem and aster-gdem issued by the United States as data sources, the upper Yellow River basin boundary is extracted by using the method of river burning and river scalar method under the ArcGIS software platform.
There is some error in the boundary of this section of the catchment because of the very small specific fall of the river from the mouth of the Three Lakes to the town of Riverhead.
