The data include the 10-year resolution dry and wet index series of five main climatic regions (arid region, main plateau, Northern Xinjiang, Hetao region and northeast plateau) in Western China in recent 400 years and the high-resolution (annual resolution) dry and wet index series of three regions (northeast plateau, Hetao region and Northern Xinjiang) in recent 500 years.

The long-term dry and wet index series (1500-2000) in Western China is obtained by synthesizing many climatic proxy records including tree rings, ice cores, lake sediments and historical documents.
Based on the widely collected proxy data set of dry and wet change in Western China, the main characteristics of dry and wet change in Western China and the Climatic Divisions are clarified. The proxy data information of different divisions are extracted, and the long-term dry and wet index series of Western China are synthesized. The data includes the 10-year resolution dry and wet index series of five main climatic zones in Western China in the past 400 years and the high-resolution (annual resolution) dry and wet index series of three regions in the past 500 years.
