The Arctic cryosphere, such as the Greenland ice sheet, permafrost, sea ice, and snow cover, plays an important role in the warming of the Arctic climate and the storage and release of anthropogenic pollutants. Microplastic particles, as an emerging anthropogenic pollutant, are currently widely present in marine and terrestrial environments worldwide. This data includes the abundance, morphology, particle size, polymer types, and emission fluxes of microplastics in rivers, lakes, snow cover, sea ice, seawater, and soil sediments in the Arctic region. The measurement of microplastics in this dataset is mainly carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and stereo microscope. In order to understand microplastics in the Arctic cryosphere and their relationship with other environmental matrices, this dataset aims to explore the current status and identify key challenges in microplastic related research in the Arctic region.

The data source is research papers on microplastics in the Arctic region published in high-quality international journals such as Environmental Science & Technology, Water Research, Science of The Total Environment, Environmental Research, Environmental Pollution, etc.
This dataset is based on the Web of Science dataset and uses the "Topic" classification retrieval function to search for terms related to the Arctic, microplastics, and microplastic pollution updated in June 2022. Words such as' sea ice ',' snow ',' glaciers', 'lakes', and' rivers' were added to the search to estimate the trend of specific elements.
This dataset collects microplastic articles published in the Arctic region from 2004 to 2022, with comprehensive searches, precise search keywords, and wide coverage.
