This dataset includes observations from China's Wariguan Global Atmospheric Background Observatory (WGABO), which is a daily average of ground-level ozone observations at Wariguan from 1994 to 2013. Established in 1994, China's Variguan Atmospheric Background Reference Observatory (VARO), located on the Tibetan Plateau, is the world's highest atmospheric background reference station and the first atmospheric background reference station located in the hinterland of a continent, which fills the gap of the Global Atmospheric Monitoring Network (GAW) within the Eurasian continent.
The Variguan Atmospheric Background Reference Observatory (VARO) was jointly invested by the Government of China and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and is operated and managed by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA). Comprehensive atmospheric background reference monitoring mainly for greenhouse gases and atmospheric ozone monitoring; halogenated greenhouse gases is a general term for greenhouse gases containing halogen atoms (fluorine, chlorine, etc.) in their molecules, which are almost entirely produced by human activities and are mainly used as refrigerants, blowing agents, aerosolizing agents, cleaning agents, fire extinguishing agents, solvents, insulating materials, etc., including SF6, HFCs, PFCs, which are restricted by the Kyoto Protocol, and CFCs and HCFCs, which are restricted by the Montreal Protocol, etc., accounting for approximately 40% of the long-lasting greenhouse gases. Montreal Protocol-limited SF6, HFCs, PFCs and Montreal Protocol-limited CFCs, HCFCs, etc., accounting for about 12 % of the radiative forcing of long-lived greenhouse gases. The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) started SF6 sampling and observation at Waliguan station in 1996, online observation of halogenated GHGs at Shangdianzi station in 2006, and scientific sampling and analysis at five stations since 2010, and the average atmospheric SF6 concentrations at Waliguan and Shangdianzi stations in 2013 were 8.10±0.12 ppt and 8.12±0.10 ppt, respectively, both of which were the highest since the observations were made.
