Datasets description

This dataset is based on glacier catalogue data and 668 landscape Landsat TM/ETM+/OLI images, combined with ArcGIS and ENVI software, NDWI and Google Earth images, and extracted by manual visual interpretation in a buffer zone 10 km away from the boundary of the glacier Icy lake boundary.

In the 1990 and 2018 glacial lake data sets, there are 27,205 and 30,121 glacial lakes in the High Asia region, with an area range of 0.0054-6.46 km2, with a total area of 1806.47±2.11 and 2080.12±2.28 km2, respectively. This glacial lake cataloging data set provides basic data for water resource evaluation in high Asia, evaluation of glacial lake outburst flood, and glacier hydrology research.

Landsat land satellite image data

Download from the U.S. Geological Survey website (https://www.usgs.gov/) and Geospatial Data Cloud (http://www.gscloud.cn/). Glacier catalogue data

Data processing method

Remote sensing data preprocessing: false color synthesis of land satellite images

Preliminary extraction of lake range: Use NDWI based on ArcMap's near-infrared band (NIR) and green band (green) to automatically extract each image of the entire HMA area. Formula: NDWI=(B_GREEN-B_NIR)/(B_GREEN+B_NIR) References: Mcpheeters, SK: The use of the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) in the delineation of open water features, Int. J. Remote Sens., 17(7), 1425-1432, doi: 10.1080/01431169608948714, 1996 .

Manual vectorization and input of attribute data Divide into 7 parts to vectorize the glacial lake boundary in 16 high-Asia sub-regions. After vectorizing the ice lake, you need to manually enter the attribute items (such as data source, lake type) at the same time.

Interactive inspection and precision control (1) Identify ice lakes through human-computer interaction; (2) The vectorization result of the ice lake boundary is interactively checked by another vectorization operation; (3) Interactively check attribute items such as ice lake classification, new/disappeared lakes, split/merged lakes, etc. Google Earth image is used as an important auxiliary reference data source for error detection.

Data quality description

The difference between the percentage of the absolute area of the lake boundary delineated by manual visual interpretation and the GPS measured boundary is between 5.5-25.5%.
The average accuracy of boundary division of ice lakes is within ±0.5 pixels (±15 m).
The results of error calculation show that in 1990 and 2018, the absolute area errors of the two glacial lake inventory data sets were about ±2.11 and ±2.28 km2, and the average relative errors were ±13.5 and ±13.2%, respectively.
