This dataset is a dataset of changes in the end of Glacier No.1 at the source of the Urumqi River in the Tianshan Mountains from 1980 to 2020. Before 1993, Glacier No.1 was a wide tailed valley glacier with a retreat distance equal to the overall glacier value; After 1993, it split into two independent valley glaciers (commonly known as the eastern and western branches of Glacier 1), and observations were conducted on each branch separately.

Marking point measurement method: It is a simple and effective method to determine the change in the end (length) of a glacier by repeatedly measuring the distance and angle from the end of the ice tongue to the marking point using instruments such as a tape measure.
Strictly following the World Glacier Monitoring Center (WGMS) and relevant domestic glacier observation and survey methods and standards, a repeated measurement of the changes at the end of the melting period of the No.1 glacier at the source of the Urumqi River in the Tianshan Mountains is conducted every year to obtain annual and comparable glacier end retreat data. At the same time, it is reported to the Blue Book of Climate Change in China to characterize the long-term retreat trend of continental glaciers in China.
